Facing the uncertainties of contemporary complexity

Why join the PhD in Contemporary Studies at the University of Coimbra? In this doctoral program, we prepare a new generation of researchers to better understand and act upon the uncertainties of contemporary complexity, in an intense environment of interdisciplinary knowledge creation. DEC promotes the study of complex processes and systems inherent to the relationships between the domains of the Human, Society and (material and immaterial) Artefact, through the interactive transformations of time, nature and the environment.

The first phase of applications for 2024-2025 is open until 1st April.

Advancing an ambitious and diverse curricular program, aggregating several scientific areas within the scope of the humanities, arts and social sciences (also including approaches to life sciences and technologies), the DEC cultivates the investigation of interconnected knowledge, based on critical and inclusive thinking, and bringing together a vast and distinguished faculty of researchers with international visibility.

Curricular Program

By actively participating in the advanced training structure of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies, DEC doctoral students become part of the global ecosystem of interdisciplinary knowledge production of this research unit, having access to numerous lectures and conferences with national and international experts, complementary training opportunities, participation in scientific project teams, organization of events and publications, creation of networks and missions, benefiting from a special financial framework for research and internationalization. By developing transversal knowledge production and skills, participation in our program prepares young researchers for careers within and outside academia.
